Who do you call when you have really good news and why?
I always call my parents first! They have always been incredibly supportive of everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve and have believed in me every step of the way. They’re the first to know when something exciting is in the works or I’ve booked a job I really wanted.
What would you say to your high school self if you could meet with her?
I didn’t always have the confidence that I have now. I would tell her to stop worrying about what other people think; to stop worrying about wearing the “right clothes” and focus on the things that make her happy. Sometimes what makes us happy and what others define as cool are not one in the same and that’s more than okay. Surround yourself with people who love and support you– it might take you a little while before you truly understand how to love yourself, but hopefully you can learn from them. Ultimately and most importantly: be you!
What pieces(s) in your wardrobe are your “armor” for when you have to face a tough day? (what pieces make you feel beautiful/strong/amazing/etc)
I always feel the most confident when I’m wearing something figure flattering! I love pairing bodysuits with high-waist bottoms. I have grown to love my shape and now I like to show it off! Something that defines my waist (like your amazing wide leg cropped trouser) always makes me feel confident. I like to feel comfortable in my clothing so I can focus on what I’m doing and not worry about how I look.
What, would you say, has made you a more confident, empowered woman in the last two years?
I’ve become more confident in that last few years through my modeling career. Being a part of the curvy community has helped me learn to love myself more than ever before. There’s a great movement happening right now around body positivity and being a part of it has helped me feel strong, beautiful, and confident. Women come in all shapes and sizes and we all want to be represented in the world of fashion, beauty and media. I am happy to be that representative for women that used to feel like me.
When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
I travel down to Florida every few weeks to appear on HSN with Trish McEvoy. If you’ve ever watched HSN, you know that they’re live 24 hours a day. When we’re down there, we get very little sleep because we might have a show at 3:00 AM and then another at 8:00 AM and so on… When we’re backstage preparing for the next show on very little sleep, things start to get giddy and we can’t help ourselves! Once the giggles start, they’re very hard to stop! The Trish team is my second family and even when we’re working hard at all hours of the night we have the best time. I can’t remember what we were laughing at, but at the time it was hysterical and we were in tears! Life is all about who you surround yourself with – I’m lucky in that I am rich with amazing friends and family in both my work and personal life.
