Glamsquad Gives Good Lip and We're Loving It For Fall
So, have you all been as obsessed with this vamped up fall lip look as we have? We can't get over the statement-making impact of these magnificent matte burgundies, plums, and autumn auburns that are substituting for our daily red.
It's like insta-channeling Adele. Or Grace Jones. Or any sultry powerhouse, really.
The fun part of this fall look is that (almost) anything goes with this richly hued pout. From a set of statement-making eyes to match to the no-makeup makeup with "hyper-real skin," it's all fair glam game, as Glamsquad's Director of Makeup Artistry Kelli Bartlett explains. "The bold lip is now showcasing more versatility, [...] paired with other strong features like contoured skin and gilded eyes."
That's what we like to hear. More flexibility = more fun. Plus, it's how we'd rock this anyway. Uniquely our own, right?
But we wanted some specifics and suggestions on how can we work this lip in a way that works for us. Meaning, insider tricks, products, and skin-tone flattering shades.
We tapped into Kelli's make-up mindset to get her step-by-step how-to for a flawless fall lip upgrade.
Let's get started.
Kelli: Here are my 3 key steps to create the perfect bold lip: Prep, Paint and Perfect
Step 1- PREP
First, go around the mouth with a concealer that’s the exact same tone as your skin. You don’t want a weird light ring around the mouth if you choose the wrong shade. Follow with a generous amount of hydrating lip primer such as Mary Kay's Timewise Age-Fighting Lip Primer, taking care to apply with precision, as the lipstick will stick where you place the primer. Mush your lips together to distribute it evenly.
Step 2 - PAINT
Pick your pout color. I like a matte color that comes in liquid form so you get 100% full coverage, and I always tell women to oversaturate the brush (try Makeup Forever's 226 Brush). Use the edge of your brush, so you have more control along the bow of the lip. Opt for a square brush to ensure a really crisp and exact line. For the bottom of the lips, draw toward the fleshiest part in the center. When using liquid matte color such as Hourglass Opaque Liquid Lipstick, you can really get the full coverage you want.
Step 3 - PERFECT
Does your handiwork appear fuller on one side and slimmer on the other? Did you miss a spot? Just adjust, even out, and perfect.
Throwing shade: What's the trick to finding the shade that's right for all of our gorgeous skin tones out there?
Kelli: For light skin tones: Matte Revolution Love Liberty by Charlotte Tilbury. This blend of rich, deep currant provides a striking pop against porcelain skin. The matte element makes a bold hue look extra chic and sophisticated.
For medium skin tones: Nars Audacious Lipstick in Bette. This creamy matte formula is silky perfection, and the ‘Bette’ Bordeaux shade is attention grabbing, drawing focus to the lip without overpowering the face.
For deep skin tones: Temptu Color True Lipstick in Jet Rouge. This rich marsala shade covers the lip with 100% opacity so it is color true and long-lasting. Great for all skin tones, the marsala shade looks especially striking on darker skin, enhancing the richness of the tone.
And how can we keep our lip game strong all day and night?
Kelli: To help the color last, use a translucent setting powder like IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Silk HD Anti-Aging Micro Powder.
